I’m at the beginning of a couple of careers/passions, and it’s been an emotional rollercoaster packed with rejection, excitement, shame, inspiration, and more. I go from feeling pride and then plummeting into imposter syndrome. What a crazy ride! I’ve written a few short stories and am working on a few more to submit to renowned publications so that I can build up publication credits.

I have a method for querying and submitting. Querying the series that I’ve worked on for over 15 years has been a harrowing process that needs to happen. It’s YA SF, so it’s already a tough sell in today’s market, but I really want an agent to advocate for me, and finding the right match is like dating! I’ve had some thoughtful rejections saying that my premise was fantastic and my writing was good so maybe I’m getting close. A bunch are just floating out in the ether.

Submitting shorter stories is a little easier than my novel baby. I’m super excited about sending my stories in, but when it comes to listing credits, that’s when I feel like a total loser. Most of the publications say they accept new/beginning writers and diverse voices, but most of the writers have awards and many esteemed credits. 😬

Hopefully, one of them will give me a chance! I just want to get my stories and voice out there in the world. If I don’t get any matches, I’ll probably end up self-publishing, which is also a big deal and something to feel excited about. I feel grateful for so much in my life…I am such a lucky human, but I need a win for my “creative” soul…if that makes any sense.

💜 Linda
